Arnaldo Rivera DOCG Barolo – Undicicomuni 2015

Spiced cedar, leather and scorched earth on the nose. The palate is wild and savoury with notes of crushed raspberry, figs, cinnamon, star anise alongside velvety dusty tannins and fresh acidity. It’s stylish meaty and delicious and super uber Nebbiolo cool.

Barolo undicicomuni is arguably Arnaldo Rivera’s most important wine. Blending fruit from across the Langhe’s eleven Barolo villages, it epitomises the quintessential values of traditional, historic Barolo; values that once Arnaldo Rivera himself and today the co-op Terre del Barolo continue to defend.

While the ArnaldoRivera single vineyard Barolos may be more eye-catching, it is the Barolo undicicomuni that demands the winemaker’s greatest attention. He is required to blend different fruit and terroir expressions from diverse villages, just as an artist balances colours to complete his work of art. This means that the Barolo undicicomuni is naturally ArnaldoRivera’s most complex Barolo.

A shorter ageing in wood – instead of the 32 months of each cru – allows the wine to be more accessible and suitable for early drinking.

“Arnaldo Rivera Barolo Undiciomuni is in the Top 100 of Wine Spectator magazines best wines of the world in 2018..Taste the whole of the Barolo area in a unique wine “ Wine Spectator Top 100

Winefront – June 2020 – Gary Walsh – 93 Points

Sourced from 11 crus, I’d guess, going by the name. I like a Barolo made in that style, and you don’t always have to rush to bottle individual crus now do you? My tasting companion on the day, Ned Goodwin MW (AKA Cap’n Jack Sparrow), also dug its frisky styling.

Fragrant dried herb, liquorice root, red fruits, hazelnut. Medium-bodied, fresh, almost sappy, crisp, red fruited, a dusting of pepper, and slightly peppery tannin, brightly lit red spectrum fruits, and a fresh dry finish, twist of orange peel. Very nice.

The project – Arnaldo Rivera wines were launched in early 2017, with Barolo vintage 2013. All  wines are from top Cru sites. The launch of AR represents a revolutionary moment in Barolo, they are the only winery in the area to produce Crus Barolo in each one of the historic villages of the appellation. Their flagship wine Barolo undicicomuni, a Barolo grande cuvée, actually works as an ambassador of the whole region, consisting of 11 villages..pretty cool!! The winery has signed an agreement with the most prestigious vineyards in order to harvest grapes of the very highest quality.

The man – Arnaldo Rivera was born on December 13th 1919 in Castiglione Falletto, a small village at the heart of the historic Barolo winegrowing area. He was a local primary school teacher, mayor of his village for 36 years, and founder in 1958 of the Terre del Barolo winery, which still today is the only direct cooperative wine cellar in Barolo. The reasons that led Arnaldo Rivera to envisage a cooperative winery in Barolo are associated with his profound understanding of the particular characteristics of the area and its people, combined with great foresight and a desire for social justice.

The result – The combination of an in-depth knowledge of the geological origins of the Barolo wine growing area plus an intensely visionary project to only work with the very best sites has resulted in fine wines of the highest quality.
