Grenache can be left in the shadows sometimes but it most certainly is one of the greatest of the noble varieties. This is a hedonist’s six pack, enjoy fabulous old-vine Grenache from Rioja, Barossa Valley & the Southern Rhone!!
Grenache is originally claimed by the Spanish but is now one of the most planted varietals. The Old Vines in the Barossa Valley, Rioja & Southern Rhone have set the judging panels alight for showcasing the vinous delights of Grenache. Grenache, for me makes very characterful proud flavoursome wine, like drinking history through the warm dry soils they like to grow old in.
Bodegas Exopto Rioja Bozeto De Exopto RRP $33
This then is an ode to the history of Garnacha in Rioja. It’s an aromatic, vital, young Rioja, bursting at the seams with red plum, liquorice and baking spice. Balancing the characteristically vibrant fruit, is ample freshness and a nip of refreshing tannin keeps everything in its right place. A fantastic wine to drink now. Even though the Grenache was hand picked one month later than normal the wine remains cool, fresh & balanced.

Domaine De Font-Sane Gigondas Cuvee Tradition RRP $39
Enjoy dark fruit, violets and cracked pepper on this elegant Grenache blend. The famous battering Mistral wind does many things and when your vineyards are, intermingled with the mountain, it adds flavour into the wine. It literally blows the flavours from the mountains and valleys flora into the grapes – delicious notes of forest pine trees, wild herbs and olive groves all permeate the grapes; the proof is in the tasting. Le Mistral also acts as a purifier by blowing away dust and pollution, increasing sunshine hours by seeing off rain clouds and clearing rot by drying the grapes. Special!
