More Information

Hatherleigh Vineyard is in the village of Laggan, near Crookwell in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales. The vineyard is at 910m altitude on an east-facing slope of red cracking clay. It typically has two or three snowfalls a year and spring frosts are a constant danger. Chardonnay and Pinot noir are planted, largely with clone MV6 with small quantities of 777 and D5V12.

Hatherleigh was planted by Nick Bulleid MW, Australia’s third Master of Wine, from 1996 to 1999. He is a winemaking consultant operating in four states, a part time writer on wine and taught as a Visiting Professor at Charles Sturt University for 13 years. He also edited and contributed to Practical Winemaking, a reference and textbook for the wine industry.

Nick makes the wine at Brokenwood, where he has been a partner since 1978, under the surveillance of Stuart Hordern. They use typical Australian Pinot methods – a short cold soak, warm fermentation with 20% whole bunches, then maturation in French oak, 25% new. His aim? “To make the best wine my site can give me. I’m very pleased with the result”
