It’s powdery in texture, off-dry as the label says, has some mineral/petrol kind of flavours, just enough acidity, though it’s a gentle wine, soft you might say, and while it lacks ‘tension’ does have easy drinking charm. I’m thinking it would work well with ‘Australian Chinese’ food. Ready to drink.”

This off-dry (Half Dry) Riesling from Ken Helm in Murrumbateman is perfectly balanced between sweetness & crunchy acidity. It smells sweet but that’s normal. However there’s a beautiful interplay of exotic fruits, wild honey, mandarine, rockmelon, stone fruits, crisp tartness, crunchy apple skins and star fruit. It’s chalky mouthfeel persists on the palate for quite a while indeed and it leaves the palate feeling fresh and bright.

Touch of blackcurrant to flavour too but the gist is citrus and a lick of honey. Fine, lightly oily texture, great extension of flavour with a lovely lingering ginger spice character to close. The Helm Family purchased land at Murrumbateman in 1973 and began planting their vineyard. Ken saw great potential in this site and planted Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cool climate wine region of Murrumbateman sits about 35 km from Canberra and about 15km from Yass, NSW Ken and his daughter Stephanie make all the wines at Helm. The winery uses a combination of the best modern Stainless steel tanks to traditional basket presses. With these techniques and a minimalist approach to wine making, Ken wants you to experience a bottle of wine that best shows the Terrior of his site. In 2010 Ken was appointed a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia recognising Ken’s service to the Australian Wine Industry, the promotion of Riesling and the Cool climate Wine regions of Murrumbateman and Yass.
