Italian Mixed Six

The below selection represents everything we at Goblet search for in a bottle of wine – purity, character & a sense of place!  Italy, home to some of the oldest wine producing regions in the world. Their regional styles are sought after by wine lovers around the world. They are unique, they set the benchmark. Any winemaker working with Sangiovese references Chianti, likewise any winemaker working with Nebbiolo of course references Barolo..and so on.  Cam & I looked at samples from all over Italy (tough job we know..) and below is a handy 6 pack selection of what we chose.

Cantina Di Negrar Soave Classico 2021

Straw yellow in colour. Clean fragrant nose of cut grass. Moving to a palate displaying green melon & dried fruits with a crisp green apple skin finish. “A perfect match with traditional Carbonara” says Cam!!

Cantina Negrar is a historic cooperative. Veneto has become Italy’s most productive wine region. Located in the heart of the Soave area at an altitude of 250 metres above sea level (helps for aromatics) and gentle southwest exposure. The soil type is limestone to clay. They use varying trellising methods to maximise the grapes flavour potential but at the same time controlling yield (an unusual goal for a Co Op). Harvest is traditionally late September & done exclusively by hand. The wines are then crushed destemmed & separated from skins, through meticulous handling the aim is to produce crisp fruit flavours.

Arnaldo Rivera DOC Barbera D' Alba 2016

Bright red colour then a nose of fragrant dark fruits. Fresh red strawberries on the palate. The wine is direct with firm tannins and crisp acidity, utterly enticing & super delicious.

Only the finest clusters of Barbera grapes, capable of crafting a very easy-drinking wine with great personality and aging potential. 100% Barbera Fermentation and maceration in temperature controlled stainless steel for 10 days then a spontaneous malolactic fermentation. Followed by 9 months ageing in stainless steel and used French oak followed by an additional year ageing in bottle before release.

Arnaldo Rivera DOCG Diano D' Alba Dolcetto 2017

'Little sweet one', so named because it is naturally low in acidity. Purple red colour, this Dolcetto gem has black cherry, raspberry and hints of blueberries on the nose. It’s soft and enticing and utterly with all of its ripe plum nectar flavours.

The village of Diano d’Alba is a story unto itself where the Barolo wine-growing area is concerned. In fact, traditionally the most widely grown varietal here is Dolcetto, which expresses all its character in the 76 vineyards with prized southerly exposures called “Sorì”. 100% Dolcetto fermentation and maceration for about one week in temperature controlled stainless steel. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation then 6 months ageing in stainless steel before release. A wine of great finesse, complex and elegant, dominated by the fruit with a solid and precise tannic structure.

Winefront - Gary Walsh - May 2020 - 91 Points

While it wasn’t maybe a high point for Nebbiolo, 2017 was an excellent year for Dolcetto and Barbera. I believe this is a side project from the large co-op, Cantina Terre del Barolo, who certainly have plenty of vineyard holdings to work with, in all the right crus. Importer: Ergo Wines

It’s a rich and ripe version of Dolcetto, and to an extent, almost puts me in mind of a Malbec. Plum, coffee, violet, spice, a plush flood of flavour, some new leather and tobacco, ripe and succulent, with a slick of suede-like tannin on the finish. Plenty to sink your teeth into here.

Cantina Di Negar Valpolicella DOC Classico Superiore 2020

Bright ruby red colour. With an intense red cherry & plum nose. To taste the wine shows black pepper & dark fleshy plum notes with acids & tannins in balance moving to a fresh savoury dried herb finish.

Cantina Negrar is a historic cooperative. Veneto has become Italy’s most productive wine region. The fertile volcanic soil and remnants of river bed strata allow the vines to grow ferociously. In the pursuit of lower yields, and higher quality grapes, the growers at Cantina Negrar have worked to temper the growth by careful trellising, including vertical training and aggressive pruning techniques. Corvina is the star of the region, though it is tricky to master. Its thick skin means it is notoriously late-ripening and requires careful attention and patience through September. Fastidiousness results in its scarlet red colour - a mouthful of lush tart cherry with hints of fresh mint and thyme…like the very name Valpolicella, it just rolls of your tongue!

Val D'OCA Prosecco DOC Extra Dry NV

100% Glera Straw yellow with greenish tinges. Fruity scent of pears and apples and overtones of acacia flowers and citrus.  A good balance between acidity and ripe fruit make this sparkling wine both delicate and intense.

Tenuta Di Nozzole Villa Nozzole DOCG Chianti Classico 2020

Produced from 100% Sangiovese grapes from the Nozzole estate in the town of Greve in Chianti. Aromas of macerated red cherries and mature fresh fruit. Assertive on the palate with a lingering dry clean finish with soft tannins. Please allow a little time for the wine to open & express itself.
