James Halliday’s Review: Cath Oates grew up in Margaret River under the care of school teacher and farmer parents Stu and Sue Oates, the endless summers ‘shearing sheep, picking up lots of sticks and rocks, and trying to slip away to hitch a ride to the beach to avoid the tedium of work’. As vineyards started to appear, so did picking grapes on holidays and weekends, and inevitably a career in wine, originally studying viticulture but moving to winemaking after her first vintage in 1998. Then followed winemaking in Italy, NZ, the US and Margaret River, heading the team at Plantagenet. Brother Russ followed the viticultural path, and was a key player in the Wilagri Vineyard planting in 1999. The name Oates Ends came with Cath hand-picking the bunches left by the harvester at the ends of the rows.
