Leeuwin Estate "Art Series" Chardonnay 2016

Leeuwin Estate "Art Series" Chardonnay 2016 - 99.5 points "The closest thing, stylistically, to... Grand Cru Burgundy I have seen in an Australian chardonnay.", Ray Jordan (The West Australian Newspaper)

He writes, "For me, the 2016 Leeuwin is the closest thing, stylistically, to Burgundy — Grand Cru Burgundy — I have seen in an Australian chardonnay. A marvellous wine that continues to mark the subtle shift to a style of more elegance and minerally finesse. There is such gorgeous texture and middle palate complexity here, with precise delivery through to a very long finish. Spices with floral notes, a touch savoury and understated mealiness that is part of this wine's DNA. What a fitting wine to mark the 50th anniversary of Leeuwin Estate." - Ray Jordan (The West Australian Newspaper)

Domaine Fevre Chablis 1er Cru "Fourchaume" 2016

Once it opens up this is a simply delightfully classical Premier Cru Chablis. No oak in this but it's richly complex with an almost flinty yet more granitic, oyster shell and salt spray crunch with punchy citrus zestiness. It sings with mid-palate weight, smackings of fleshy orange/mandarin pithiness and gunsmoke. Loads of peachy white stone-fruit zip and exotic fruits sit alongside like a good rugby winger. It's fresh, lively and full of verve. 90 points, Chris Foster

92 points, Decanter, Tasting note: Subdued but mineral nose, with some appley fruit in the background. Rich and suave, the palate is concentrated yet airy and well balanced. This is a wine of charm rather than power, with a discreet mineral tang on the long finish. Drinking Window 2018 - 2025

88 Points, Burghound, Tasting note: A more reticent nose is comprised by notes of mineral reduction, citrus rind and plenty of petrol character. The overtly round and succulent flavors possess a highly seductive mouth feel that deliver slightly better depth and length on the saline-inflected finish where a trace of warmth appears. This too should drink well on the early side.

Kumeu River "Mates" Chardonnay 2016

96 Points, Nick Stock, Jamessuckling.com, Nov 2017, "A very composed and complete wine that has plenty of vibrant lively fruit freshness on the nose and a smoothly rendered array of ripe peach and nectarine fruits in the mouth. Some warm oak spice builds nicely into the finish. In good form." Drink now. Screw cap.

"Maté's is usually the tightest, most linear of the KR Chards, and that's again the case. The 2016 Mate's Vineyard Chardonnay is marked by smoky new oak, but there's also pineapple and grapefruit notes that create a crisp, acidic spine. Draped off of that are hints of white peaches, roasted hazelnuts and tangerine. There's an almost briny zestiness to the lingering finish that sets it apart from the winery's other single-vineyard bottlings." - Joe Czerwinski, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.

Winery's note: "Hand harvesting in a vintage like 2016 is crucial in maintaining the standard of the Estate Chardonnay that we have set for this wine. The nose is immediately fragrant and peachy with a touch of mealiness. The texture supple and with a beautiful bracing acidity on the finish. The wine is delicious now and will provide beautiful drinking over the next 6 years."
