More Information

Quartz Reef applies the proven winemaking talents of Austrian-born Rudi Bauer, who continues to enjoy & explore the Pinot Noir’s many dimensions, and the convergence of the old and the new wine worlds.

Rudi Bauer: Rudi was born in the district of Salzburg, Austria. Gaining degrees in viticulture and winemaking in Gumpoldskirchen (1975-79) and Krems (1980-82) in Austria and followed by winemaking business college in Bad Kreuznach (1983-84), Germany.

Named after New Zealand’s largest quartz deposit that lies beneath our vineyards at Bendigo Station, Quartz Reef has become the vessel for what winemaker Rudi Bauer calls – his search to make wines which exhibit “a symphony of flavours” that “capture attention and entertain so that you forget everything else”.

Quartz reef was founded in 1996 and the principal partners are Rudi Bauer, Trevor Scott, John Perriam.

Quartz Reef vinifies wines of outstanding flavour and intensity. There are currently 30 hectares under cultivation. The key to this distinction lies in the maturing sun drenched slopes situated at Quartz Reef’s Bendigo Estate vineyard. Under Rudi’s custodianship Pinot Noir becomes the essence of Central Otago whilst Pinot Gris takes on a rich textured dry style.

All Quartz Reef wines benefit greatly from Rudi Bauer’s Austrian heritage exploring the many dimensions of the varieties.

The farming philosophy at Quartz Reef is based on a method of organic farming originally developed by Rudolf Steiner, called Biodynamics. Biodynamic viticulture is the maintenance and enrichment of soil and vine health and the recognition of the rhythms of the cosmos and their influence on weather, soil, plant and animal life.
