Rockford “Rifle Range” Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 (Museum Release)

Rockford “Rifle Range” Cabernet Sauvignon 2006. This is a “Winemakers Release” (stored at Rockford) until July 2018, it has been perfectly cellared and ready to be consumed or put away in your cellar for a few more years to come. I recall tasting this wine many years ago, 2010 perhaps, and what I do remember was its mix of cassis, chocolate and minty, eucalypt-like flavours. I tasted the 2006 again in July 2018 and saw the same, however the chocolate, spice and cassis have mellowed to a darker spectrum including earth and tobacco (cigar box). I got no hint of mintiness but rather a rustic, sinnewy, seam of structure lingering under the fruit. Rifle Range is well worth cellaring, that’s my take away and this one has been well aged.

5 Star Winery – Halliday Wine Companion

“Rockford can only be described as an icon, no matter how overused that word may be. It has a devoted band of customers who buy most of the wine through the cellar door or mail order (Rocky O’Callaghan’s entrancing annual newsletter is like no other). Some wine is sold through restaurants, and there are two retailers in Sydney, and one each in Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. Whether they will have the Basket Press Shiraz available is another matter; it is as scarce as Henschke Hill of Grace (but less expensive).” – James Halliday
