Rouleur Grenache 2016 (95JH)

Loads of flavour. Super juicy. Wild strawberry, raspberry and spicy, briary stuff…bright and fresh on the palate with a clean finish that persists for minutes after you put the glass down. This is a fine-boned Grenache indeed more akin to a spicy, juicy well structured Pinot Noir but it holds the McLaren Vale line. Simply put, it makes me happy. Serve slightly chilled.

More Information

Matt East grew up in the Yarra Valley and worked alongside his father in the family vineyard from a young age. He dedicated 10 years to viticulture with a focus on Pinot Noir and made wine in the shed while growing up. He further honed his skills in local wineries during vintage and eventually left the Yarra Valley to study, travel and pursue a career in the broader wine industry. Rouleur wines err on the side of early picked where bright natural acid works in sync with varietal perfume, flavour and textures. All Rouleur fruit is handpicked and sorted, with the Yarra Valley Chardonnay being crafted from select clones (P76, P58, i10V1) where gentle pressing of bunches dominates before being gravity fed to larger format oak barrels. The Rouleur red wines are mostly fermented with whole berries intact, while whole bunches are opted-for when site, vintage and style dictate accordingly.

Customer review

  1. Chris Foster

95 Points, James Halliday, “52yo bushvines, gently crushed and destemmed with 20% whole bunches on top, 3 days cold soak, open-fermented with cultured yeast, two ferments, one with 7 days post-ferment maceration, the other conventional 10 days, matured in used hogsheads for 11 months. Grenache a la McLaren Vale, with its unique expression, particularly if the Langhorne Creek is kept at or below 14.5%. The vinification was complex, but totally successful, with red and purple fruits supported by gently savoury tannins. Fills the mouth, but doesn’t cloy.”
