Schwarz Wine Co Meta Shiraz 2020

$33.00

Hand Picked | Wild Yeast |18% Whole Bunch | Unfined and Unfiltered.

Jason’s Tasting note: The fruit for this wine was grown over four sub regions in the Barossa & Eden Valley with Stonewell as the most prominent sub region. The fruit was sourced from six growers from vineyards in Stonewell, Light Pass, Eden Valley & Vine Vale. The oldest vineyard used in the Meta Shiraz is from the Light Pass vineyard at 90 years of age. Individual parcels are predominantly handpicked with whole bunch portions used according to the desired outcome. In total, 18% of the wine was whole bunch. (Bunches of grapes added to the fermentation tank without the berries removed from the stalk. This process assists with tannin structure as the stalks break down in the fermentation process) All parcels were fermented in small open fermenters, with wild yeast (naturally occurring yeast) carrying out the duties. Soft pump overs, hand plunges and foot stomping was carried out as required. Parcels were pressed and then transferred to French oak puncheons and hogsheads for maturation. (15% of the blend was matured in new French oak) Final blending occurred in June 2020. A vegan friendly wine with no fining or filtration

James Halliday’s Review: The economical name is appropriate for a business that started with 1 tonne of grapes making two hogsheads of wine in 2001. Shiraz was purchased from Jason Schwarz’s parents’ vineyard in Bethany, the vines planted in 1968; the following year half a tonne of grenache was added, once again purchased from the parents. In ’05, grape sale agreements with another (larger) winery were terminated, freeing up 1.8ha of shiraz and 0.8ha of grenache. From this point on things moved more quickly: in ’06 Jason formed a partnership (Biscay Road Vintners) with Peter Schell of Spinifex, giving them total control over production. Jason Schwarz’s wines taste of the vineyards where the grapes are grown. And he’s got a good eye for finding great vineyards… both Jason’s father and his grandfather were state pruning champions, he grew up among the vines on the family property at Bethany and he’s worked alongside some of the Barossa’s best-known grape growers and winemakers. A shed-load of experience has taught him that once you find great fruit you look after it with a light touch. “I like the fruit to speak for itself,” Jason says.
