Winter Reds –  It’s about the Yin & Yang!

We are offering six comforting winter reds, well it’s that time of year! A comforting winter red should be rich, but we believe it should also offer more, it should also be interesting, balanced and sumptuous.  So, with that in mind the below six are a mix of grapes Dolcetto, Cabernet, Pinot, Shiraz a mix of countries, Australia, France & Italy plus a mix of low intervention winemaking methods! There are classics below & a few more progressive styles, but all are made by super great people, all with great stories to tell! These wines are hearty, yes, but as always at Goblet we want our wines to be balanced. Yin & yang, the opposite forces of richness & freshness interrelate with each other, to make perfect winter reds.

Schwarz Wine Co Meta Grenache 2019

The Schwarz Wine Co Meta Grenache 2019 offers a bouquet that is fresh, clean and spicy, with lovely ripe dark cherry notes. The palate is balanced, medium bodied and flavoursome, with just enough tannin on the finish. Hand-picked, wild yeast, 91% whole bunches, unfined, unfiltered. Fruit source: Bethany 75 year-old vines and Marananga 90 year-old vines. Built with freshness and vibrancy in mind, this leaps with wild strawberries and red liquorice with undercurrents of Grenache’s signature sweet boiled candy generosity all elevated by an invigorating menthol lift.

BK Wines "Skin n Bones" Pinot Noir 2018

Fermented in big old concrete vats using 100% whole bunches to add freshness. This is pretty to smell. It's fresh & high-toned with orange peel, spices, sour cherries, mulberries & just keeps showing layers of fruit. Love the tannin structure; it's almost gamay-like, earthy, savoury and pure.. like Beaujolais!

Domaine Melody Crozes-Hermitage Rouge 2015

100% Shiraz. It opens to reveal a touch of rusticity on the nose. Dark spices, chocolate, graphite, dark plums and woody herbs. The palate is muscular, not over the top, it’s dark and chewy but there’s elegance here. Dark plums and spices interwoven with cured meats, dark chocolate and that graphite-like tannin grip makes for excellent structure all the way to the end. Excellent value Crozes.

Helm Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Helm Cabernet is always great value for money. The 2017 is right on the money, typically Helm in every respect. Dark spices, cinnamon, some lingering exotic spices too but it’s cassis that kicks through the palate. Christmas pudding & blueberries and brambly tones tag along with some aromatic oak that makes for excellent drinking.

Arnaldo Rivera DOCG Diano D' Alba Dolcetto 2017

'Little sweet one', so named because it is naturally low in acidity. Purple red colour, this Dolcetto gem has black cherry, raspberry and hints of blueberries on the nose. It’s soft and enticing and utterly with all of its ripe plum nectar flavours.

The village of Diano d’Alba is a story unto itself where the Barolo wine-growing area is concerned. In fact, traditionally the most widely grown varietal here is Dolcetto, which expresses all its character in the 76 vineyards with prized southerly exposures called “Sorì”. 100% Dolcetto fermentation and maceration for about one week in temperature controlled stainless steel. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation then 6 months ageing in stainless steel before release. A wine of great finesse, complex and elegant, dominated by the fruit with a solid and precise tannic structure.

Winefront - Gary Walsh - May 2020 - 91 Points

While it wasn’t maybe a high point for Nebbiolo, 2017 was an excellent year for Dolcetto and Barbera. I believe this is a side project from the large co-op, Cantina Terre del Barolo, who certainly have plenty of vineyard holdings to work with, in all the right crus. Importer: Ergo Wines

It’s a rich and ripe version of Dolcetto, and to an extent, almost puts me in mind of a Malbec. Plum, coffee, violet, spice, a plush flood of flavour, some new leather and tobacco, ripe and succulent, with a slick of suede-like tannin on the finish. Plenty to sink your teeth into here.

Woodlands 'Wilyabrup' Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2017

Winery Notes: In the glass the wine displays a vibrant garnet. The nose opens to display bright varietal characters of blackcurrant, combined with subtle lifted aromatics of strawberries and the floral scent of rose. Deeper layers then emerge bringing black tea, aniseed, maple and cocoa. At the heart of the nose lies the beauty of fresh clay, capturing the essence of the earth itself. The palette has the zing of raspberry and some spiciness of black pepper and gentle oak.

This is a youthful and lively wine, balanced with fine tannins to create an excellent structure and a savoury finish. To appreciate this wine fully, we suggest opening one hour before drinking. To be enjoyed most between 2020-2026.
