First Foot Forward began in 2013 with the aim of making Yarra Valley wines that are textural, balanced, value for money and most importantly, interesting. Martin Siebert works with strong vineyard sites and experienced growers and the wines are made with little intervention or additives. First Foot Forward wines are a little experimental , skin contact, Amphora vessels for fermentation resulting in wines that deliver plenty of interest and are recognised for over-delivering for their price.
First Foot Forward Pinot Noir Yarra Valley 2022
The 2019 Pinot Noir is from a vineyard in Coldstream (Yarra Valley Floor). This sub-region is known for a more savoury style of Pinot but with careful vine canopy management and good timing of the picking at harvest, the red cherry fruit can be brought to the fore. A long and gentle post ferment maceration brings the fine tannins to support this fruit. Wild yeasts did the fermenting before a long and gentle soak on skins to build the fine tannin structure that supports the red cherry fruit. A lick of new oak frames the wine and brings some wonderful complexity all round.
Campbell Mattinson – October 2020
Excellent release!
It pulls you this way and that but this is both a complex offering and a good one. Sweet cherry-plum flavours meet undergrowth, leafy spice, red currant and brick dust. Tannin is fine and well – threaded and it finishes with a satisfying kick-on of flavour. Its very good for both quality and value.
