Carrick Bannockburn Pinot Noir 2019

$58.00

The Carrick Bannockburn Pinot Noir is known for its structure and its ability to age well over a long period of time. The 2018 growing season had the hottest growing season on record, with rain just before harvest, it was incredibly unusual and picking began two weeks earlier than normal. The resulting wines are generous and impressive.

This wine is an integral part of the Carrick range of wines .The fruit comes from a parcel of vines which are entirely grown on their own roots and are the oldest vines on the property. Now 25 years old.

The Carrick Bannockburn Pinot Noir is a blend of 4 different parcels and 3 different clones, from both the Cairnmuir Vineyard (10/5; Clone 5 and 777) and Arthur’s Vineyard (10/5, Clone 5 and Clone 13). All vines are planted on their own roots, organically certified and tended to by hand. Destemmed, then fermented using wild yeast, each parcel spends 9 months ageing in barrel, of which 20% are new French oak barrels. Each barrel is carefully selected, before blending and remains in tank over harvest, allowing it time to unify.

This is classic Central Otago Pinot Noir, with good structure, earthy tones alongside red fruit and great balance, with at least 1 year of bottle age before release. A wine of great structure!

More Information

Carrick’s vineyards and winery are situated on Cairnmuir Road in Bannockburn, a small subregion of the cool climate of Central Otago New Zealand,  stretching along the southern side of the Kawarau River.

Named after the Carrick Range, all the wines are estate-grown, wild fermented using native vineyard yeasts and minimal winery additions. The wines are certified organic through BioGro and the company is certified Sustainable by SWNZ. Biodynamic practices have been employed since 2008.

At Carrick the focus is on Organic farming and Pinot Noir. The oldest vines on the property are 25 years old and many are planted on their own original root stock. The aim is to make wines which are expressive of the place and the season. The nutrition of the vines is supplemented by their own organic composts, and careful use of natural products such as seaweed. Pruning, leaf plucking, shoot and bunch thinning, are all carried out manually, by a small team of dedicated employees. Grapes are harvested by hand to ensure quality control is of the highest standard.

Grape bunch selection at harvest is crucial with only the best parcels used for Carrick wines.

Barrel ageing and the use of many of the best coopers from France is also a key component of the wines and provides further layers and complexity.

Grape varieties such as Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and of course Pinot Noir makeup this exciting selection of wines from Carrick.
